York County FCU uncovers ATM skimming device

Officials at York County Federal Credit Union say that a small portion of cards were compromised following the May 21 discovery of an electronic skimming device on an ATM located at 870 Main St. in Sanford.

York County Federal President Scott Chretien said in a release that the device, which is placed over an ATM’s card slot and reads the magnetic strip without the user’s knowledge, is likely an isolated incident.

“We have not determined the full extent of the violation, but we know that the number of cards involved is a very small [portion] of cards we have in the community,” Chretien said in a statement.

Following the discovery of the device, the credit union has implemented a number of high-alert safeguards and, according to the release, will be using extra precautions in monitoring members’ accounts for inconsistencies. The credit union will also continue to use its own anti-skimming technology.

“Our members can also take comfort in knowing that their accounts have extensive insurance coverage that protect them from losses due to fraud,” Chretien said. “We can assure them that their accounts with us are completely safe.”

York County Federal’s practice is to deposit any funds missing due to fraud back into those accounts.
