Boothbay Harbor Country Club executive sous chef Nathaniel Adam won the title of International Oyster Chef of the Year at the recent Damariscotta Oyster Celebration.
The Lincoln County News reported that Adam, a 23-year-old self-taught chef, competed with seven other chefs from the U.S. and Canada. “Chef Adam’s preparation really celebrated the oyster,” Food Network Magazine’s vice president of digital culinary content, Michelle Buffardi, told the newspaper.
The Boothbay Register reported that the seven chefs were paired with seven oyster farmers based on the Damariscotta River.
This is not the first time Adam has received top honors. In October 2017, he won the annual Maine Lobster Chef of the Year competition held Oct. 20 as part of Portland's Harvest on the Harbor Festival. And the month previously, he won the annual Claw Down lobster competition in Boothbay Harbor.
The Boothbay Harbor Country Club, dating back to 1921, underwent extensive renovations in recent years and reopened in May 2016, housing a 5-star restaurant, sports bar and grille, outdoor heated seating with fire pit, a pro shop, and luxury locker rooms.
The Damariscotta Oyster Celebration was held for the first time this year, June 14-16, to celebrate the oyster crops raised on the Damariscotta River and estuaries, according to its website. The celebration was spearheaded by an alliance of Damariscotta oyster farmers to educate and inspire oyster culinary innovations in food, drink and culture. It included oyster farm tours, tastings and a shucking competition. The oyster chef competition was held at the Boothbay Harbor Oceanside Golf Resort.
