New data show that the number of ZIP code areas in Maine with expensive real estate has nearly doubled in the past year.

That’s one of the findings of a national analysis conducted by real estate blog PropertyShark.com.

In 2019, the median home price in four Maine ZIPs exceeded $500,000, according to the annual study. This year, the number has grown to seven.

As it did last year, the ZIP code for Cumberland Foreside had the highest median price within Maine, at $768,000. No. 2 was Ogunquit, ZIP code 03907, with a median price of $654,000. Cape Elizabeth, ZIP code 04107, came in third at $595,000.

Other communities in Cumberland and York counties rounded out most of the top 10. The Hancock County town of Mount Desert, ZIP code 04660, ranked No. 10, with a median price of $458,000.

Nationwide, none of the priciest 100 ZIP codes began with the familiar Maine prefix of “04.” And only one ZIP started with “03,” which designates part of York County and also New Hampshire. That code, 03871, was for Rye Beach, N.H., which ranked No. 96.

The most expensive ZIP nationwide was 94207, designating Atherton, Calif., where the median home price was $7 million. ZIP codes in California and New York dominated the rankings.

The most expensive residential real estate in New England was in ZIP code 06878, for Riverside, Conn., with a median price of $1.85 million. Maine and Vermont were the only New England states without a ZIP code making the top 100.
