Zombie target practice, firefighting academy draw record numbers at camps

Despite the proliferation of constant connectivity with smartphones, tablets and social media, summer camps in Hancock County continue to be a big draw for children from in and outside the state of Maine.

The Mount Desert Island-based Camp Beech Hill, which has record-breaking registration numbers this year, offers an experiential learning program, including Lobstering 101, where campers can get a crash course in the daily life of a lobsterman. In July, the camp is home to a Junior Firefighting Academy, where campers learn first-hand the trials of being a firefighter, according to The Ellsworth American.

The Down East Family YMCA’s Camp Discovery in Eastbrook has already reached full capacity for the entire summer camping season, the American reports, in part by offering campers a twist on familiar activities, including stand-up paddle boarding and a shooting range, where campers get to test their marksmanship on targets adorned with the faces of zombies.

Hopefully, the later won’t become an experiential learning program.
