Zoning change approved for Calais LNG

The city of Calais has approved zoning changes to accommodate a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal or other projects.

The Calais City Council recently voted to amend its comprehensive plan and land use regulations to create a marine industrial zone that would allow developer Calais LNG to locate a terminal on a 330-acre site along the banks of the St. Croix River and Passamaquoddy Bay, according to the Bangor Daily News. Calais LNG in January filed its application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the $800 million-$1 billion terminal, which would include two 160,000-cubic-meter storage tanks, a pier and a 20.5-mile pipeline.

City councilors said the change was not specific to Calais LNG's plan, but would allow projects like it to move forward. "If Calais LNG should not happen, we will still be ready for other such projects in the future," City Manager Diane Barnes told the paper. City officials have supported the project, saying it would drive economic development and create jobs. Company officials said the project would create 50 to 80 full-time jobs and up to 1,000 temporary jobs during construction.
