The city of Bangor has tapped Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp. for work related to a proposed $73 million arena in the city.
The city council's finance committee approved giving the $175,000 contract to Cianbro for preconstruction services, including design review, cost control and constructability analysis of the site, according to the Bangor Daily News. City officials earlier this year approved a plan for a new arena with up to 7,400 seats and meeting and conference space. The arena would be Phase I of the project and would cost between $40 million to $55 million, while Phase II, the conference and meeting space, would cost $10 million to $15 million. The city has received $7.5 million from its share of revenue from Hollywood Slots, and contracted with Eastern Maine Development Corp. to help raise additional funds for the project.
However, the contract with Cianbro does not mean the city must go through with the project, according to the paper. "The city can decide to stop at any point in time," Finance Director Debbie Cyr said. The full city council is expected to give the contract with Cianbro final approval next week.
