Research released last week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that double-masking — wearing a cloth face mask over a surgical mask — can reduce exposure to COVID-19 by as much as 96%. The findings come as concern grows about new, more contagious variants of the novel coronavirus, some of which may also be more deadly.

However, as the number of COVID-19 vaccinations increases and case rates decrease nationwide, some states are relaxing requirements to wear masks at all. In Maine, there have been protests in Augusta, Belfast and elsewhere against the state's mask mandate.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Wolensky recently warned: “If we relax these mitigation strategies with increasing transmissible variants out there, we could be in a much more difficult spot. Now is the time to not let up our guard. Now is the time to double down.”

Over the last 8 or so months the CDC has offered contradictory advice and conflicting advice and advice that appears to be politically driven. Now the double masking said to be 96% effective comes EIGHT MONTHS after we were told that wearing a mask for 2 weeks would "flatten the curve" and now after 8 months of masking and distancing, the infection rate is at an all time high. Haven't we heard enough from the CDC?

I am double masking. Our employees are required to mask, have been provided the CDC guidelines, but double masking is optional at the individuals discretion.
