Gov. Janet Mills on Tuesday ordered Mainers to stay at home for the next month, except when they're working at an "essential" job or performing an "essential" activity, such as buying groceries or obtaining medical care.

Although cities including Portland and South Portland began similar stay-at-home bans last week in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the governor had stopped short of a statewide measure.

With Mills' order, which runs from April 2-30, only six U.S. states — Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota and South Dakota — had not adopted stay-at-home mandates as of April 1. Eleven states had implemented the requirements in only some of their counties. Pennsylvania was the sole Northeastern state with a partial requirement.

The Governor has shown strong leadership in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. She has a great general in Dr. Shah.

It should have been done weeks ago, but I am so grateful it is being done now. It was absolutely the right thing to do.

The people at all levels of decision-making about COVID-19 are in uncharted territory. We need to give all of them some leeway and not second-guess them. We are all in this together, and will come out of it stronger if we work together rather than trying to undermine our leaders. That goes for local, state, and federal government officials. So, yes, I am in support of Governor Mills on this.

The governor continues to take well-informed, measured steps to protect Maine people and businesses. We are fortunate to have her at the helm during this challenging time.
