Thanksgiving travel plans in the U.S. look very different this year than in 2020.

AAA predicts 53.4 million people plan to travel this week, up 13% from 2020′s COVID-19 holiday. Those numbers bring travel volumes within 5% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

But in Maine, COVID-19 could put a damper on such plans. Hospitalizations for the disease have been soaring, and Maine's per capita case count now ranks No. 12 among states with the highest.

Over the past few weeks, the number of hospitalizations in Maine has remained far above the peak levels in November 2020, and on Monday reached 296 patients statewide.

Do you plan to travel farther for Thanksgiving this week than you did last year?

I answered "no" but only because this year it is our turn to host. Last year we traveled to our daughter's house.

    Thanksgiving Holiday Dilemma

John & Linda Burgess, of Camden Hills Realty fame solved a Thanksgiving Holiday dilemma. Normally a great day of celebration bringing family and friends together is now complicated by Covid-19, vaccines and yes, politics. Plans were in place for this year’s big day after the disappointment of having to cancel the traditional gathering last year. Thanksgiving 2021 was back. How exciting--- Then the thought of family and friends clustered around home, hearth and table became a concern. There was a new twist to the day brought on by news reports of increasing virus counts and hospitalizations. What is a family to do? It was time to regroup recognizing everyone in the clan was not in perfect health or in perfect politics. Thanksgiving was to be a day where everyone would bring a favorite side dish from an old family recipe to share. The hosts as usual were to provide another perfectly cooked turkey from French & Brawn. --- Plan B went into effect. A Thanksgiving Family Grab & Go… Guests will now bring their side dishes a few days in advance of the Holiday to the Burgess’ home. Then on Thanksgiving, double back to pick up a complete specially packaged Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and dessert to take back home to enjoy. Holiday candles are even provided. Success is on the horizon for a 2021. A Thanksgiving Grab & Go. We have even managed to avoid the politics. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us. Enjoy.
