Julia Munsey, executive director of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, and Curtis Picard, head of the Retail Association of Maine, both weighed-in recently in a commentary in Mainebiz against a Paid Family Medical Leave Benefits Program now pending before the Legislature. I don't see why wanting paid leave is any kind of handout. As for getting people back to work, Maine has more people at work today that ever in history, and lower unemployment now than ever in history.

We need to stop mandating socialistic ideals on the small businesses of Maine. We need to come up with ideas to get people back to work, not saddle small businesses with more taxes that will pay more people to not work. This should be up to each business. If employees want this paid time off, they need to go find a job where they do this. Stop hamstringing small businesses. We do NOT need any more taxes in Maine. Enough already!

Another tax on the businesses of Maine? Hey, Augusta, how about bringing our state spending down to fund this? Even better, how about we take the 25% of males between the ages of 18 to 54 who have decided not to participate in the workforce and take them off welfare?
Sincerely, from the overworked and overtaxed workers of Maine!

I work for a very small family owned business and this will be the last nail in the coffin. We are mandated to pay a high minimum wage, provide paid time off at the rate of 1 hour per 40 hours worked and recently been mandated to offer 401 K to those wishing to participate. Small businesses struggle as it is, barely making a profit; let government continues to add socialistic mandates. When is it going to end? This proposal sounds great to the general public that want handouts, but at what cost? More taxes plain and simple and a formula that doesn't add up. A no vote for me
