As Black Friday shopping got underway last week, news broke about what may be an unwelcome holiday visitor— the omicron variant of COVID-19. While much is unknown about this version of the virus, the 30-plus mutations in omicron could make it highly contagious.
On Monday morning, no cases had yet been reported in the U.S. But the variant had already prompted international travel bans and a state of emergency in New York.

The variant may not be in Maine or even the US yet. Also symptoms are much, much milder. In fact it The Delta variant will remain our greatest health risk in Maine and beyond. Amazon and the precipitously rising home delivery industry will continue to be greatest threat to Maine retailers.
Many have already done most of their holiday shopping, which was largely done online anyway.
This could be bad, very bad, but it's effects will not be here in Maine until after our holiday season.
From what I have read this variant isn't any more serious than other variants. The media needs to stop the fear mongering.

Why talk about the omicron variant when the Delta variant has our daily cases, death rate, and hospitalizations at or above the peak numbers from the beginning of the year? Online retailing, and supply chain issues (seriously, go in the stores and look around at the sparse inventory) are what will control the Christmas purse strings this year. Go spend time with your family and friends. Enjoy the holiday season!
