On Tuesday, Gov. Janet Mills announced that private campgrounds and RV parks in Maine can reopen for the Memorial Day weekend, sooner than the date originally planned, June 1. However, she also postponed the reopening of gyms, fitness centers and nail salons.

Both decisions modify the timetable Mills introduced April 29 to allow the state's businesses to gradually resume operations, sector by sector. Many have been shuttered for almost two months in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In Tuesday's announcement, Mills said the delayed opening of gyms, fitness centers and nail salons is based on new evidence about the risk of transmitting the disease via those businesses. The reopening timetable is flexible and is being updated "when necessary in order both to protect public health and support our economy."

Does the modified timetable for reopening Maine businesses — sooner for some, later for others — make sense?
Yes (53%, 57 VOTES)
No (47%, 50 VOTES)

Since we don't have to quarantine during the regular flu season that on average kills 66,000 people annually in the US each year, are we going to shut down every time some new virus hits the country? We need to get out there and build up herd immunity like other countries are doing instead of totally wrecking their economy. Where is this outrage at the number of deaths during the regular flu season? We need to use basic safety precautions but we need to open up and get back out there and back to work. Yes we may have a spike and we will experience more deaths but the population as a whole will be better off building up natural immunities to this. Covid-19 is already mutating, so will we stay closed forever? Wake up Maine!!

I understand that some businesses may pose a higher risk of transmission. However, based on the way things are going, we are basically singling out which businesses will fail. Does a nail salon or gym get more time if they have PPP loans, do they get other resources that will help them stay closed longer?

Businesses should decide when they open and how they manage the Covid. People should decide their comfort level and act accordingly!

We need to be extremely careful. Remember the cases reported today reflect the stay-at-home conditions of 10 - 14 days ago. We risk experiencing a spike in cases in those areas where restrictions are relaxed. This could hit our rural healthcare system which is already under pressure to remain solvent. I understand the need for income and economic activity, but at what cost in lives impacted or lost. We should be pressuring our federal government to be more pro-active and creative to support everyone in the US.

OK - It is acceptable to do my hair in the salon, but not my nails? These rules are haphazard, to say the least. And are not the state park campgrounds re-opening as well? Could it be that the State does not want to follow the stringent guideline/rules of the Governor's orders, and will just wait for the relaxed time period? Finally - does this new pronouncement only apply to the 12 open counties, or can campgrounds near Katahdin open as well? Have we not learned that one size does not fit all? You know that if this outbreak was centered in Washington County, there is no way that Portland businesses would be closed!
