Last week, Mainebiz reported on the resignations and planned retirements of the top executives at the state's two largest public companies, its largest private employer and a major trade group.

First there was news of Greg Sweetser, who will step down in May from his role as executive director of the Ski Maine Association after 24 years. Then came the resignation of Benjamin Shaw, president and CEO of Covetrus Inc., the Portland-based provider of animal-health products, technology and services. We carried retirement announcements from Bill Caron and Richard Petersen, MaineHealth CEO and president, respectively, who both will leave in less than 24 months. And tragically, IDEXX chairman, president and CEO Jonathan Ayers resigned because of the spinal injury he suffered in a June cycling accident.

Nearly half of leadership transitions are regarded as failures within two years, says consultant McKinsey & Co. What do you say?
