LinkedIn says biographies with headshot photos receive 21 times more views than those without, and users receive nine times more connection requests when they include pictures of themselves.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the power of a portrait is leading some people to pay over $1,000 for a professionally taken headshot. Even in the age of selfies.

But headshots don’t help everyone equally, one recruiter said, especially if a job applicant isn't white or male. An applicant’s odds of receiving an offer can also diminish if the headshot doesn’t resemble what a boss has already pictured.

Such factors are fueling a niche market for photographers who offer facial expression coaching, or FEC.
