As Mainebiz recently reported, firearm sales in the state appear to have shot upward since the start of the pandemic. While COVID-19 has decimated the economy, Maine gun merchants could be on their way to a record sales year.

Gun sales are difficult to gauge precisely, but the number of purchaser background checks — widely used as a measure — are on track to reach nearly 129,000 in Maine during 2020. That's the most since the FBI began compiling the records in 1998.

Maine gun dealers say much of the recent growth has come from first-time buyers, of "all ages, demographics and political leanings."
