With the arrival of fall on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 3:21 p.m. EDT, it's official — summer is over.

For many Maine businesses, the season was a continuation of the pandemic's awful economic toll. For others, it was a boom time.

But statewide, it's safe to say, the summer of 2021 has been unlike any other. Except, perhaps, the one last year.

    We believe that the leadership skills and courage of Governor Mills to take seriously the threats of COVID placed Maine in a "safer than most/many" other states. Also, Washington County and other nearby counties were generally serious in their response to the health threats. Plus the closure of the Roosevelt Bridge to Campobello Island, Canada, reduced more distant visitors traveling through Maine and onto the Island. These all made for safer areas in Maine, and brought visitors who understood that serious Maine businesses were following the guidelines set by state leaders and health care professionals.
