Is 88 really the new 50?

So says Bob Greene, a retired journalist who spent 36 years at the Associated Press. The Minot resident is now 87 and has a birthday coming up.

Like several other older people profiled in this new Mainebiz cover story, Greene has "unretired" — and now divides his time between two part-time gigs.

The workplace has changed, demographics have changed, and more formerly retired people are finding encore careers. That's especially noticeable in Maine, the oldest state in the country, with a median age of 44.8.

I will work until I am at least 67, maybe as old as 70. I don't plan to work at that point, unless I have to, but definitely still plan to volunteer my time at my church or other nonprofits I support.

I've chosen a different type of work where I am my own boss. I doubt I could ever feel comfortable in a controlling environment which so many jobs are. Even small ventures like a specialty greenhouse or a food truck or an extension of a hobby like woodworking ... enough to keep busy, make a little money and give your partner some time away - for various reasons. It's that or Oprah all day.
