Thursday, April 22, is Earth Day — and some businesses and organizations are using this week to recognize the importance of environmental sustainability.
For example, the Ecology School in Saco is now opening a new, ultra-green campus, a $14.1 million project that took six years of planning and construction. The new facilities have been designed to meet what are widely regarded as the most stringent sustainable building standards in the world.
While it's not clear what workplaces will look like when more Mainers return to them, it's likely that more offices, factories, shops and other sites will be green.

Utilizing existing building infrastructure is as green as it gets. Construction and demolition debris accounts for 40% of waste in our landfills in the US. While it can be more expensive, we need to get better at re-using one of our largest resources - the (already) built environment. My business is committed to small-scale redevelopment projects and locating businesses in existing buildings.

What does environmental stability really mean? It has a different meaning for each person. It is much easier to accomplish with new buildings, and I believe most building owners currently try to reduce energy use as much as possible.
