As Mainebiz first reported on April 1, the war in Ukraine has prompted WEX Inc. to sever its business relationship with Lukoil, a Russian energy conglomerate.

The Portland-based financial technology services provider said in a statement, "We want to go beyond what is required of us to ensure that none of our operations contribute, in any way, to adding or supporting Putin's aggressive actions."

But another major Maine company with an international footprint, IDEXX Laboratories, has said little about its operations in Russia or whether they will change because of the unprovoked attack on Ukraine.

Many Maine businesses benefit directly or indirectly from global commerce, which — until recently — had included small but growing participation from the Russian economy, the world's 11th-largest.

Should Maine businesses cease any operations that even indirectly include Russia?
Yes (84%, 216 VOTES)
No (16%, 40 VOTES)

NO corporation should EVER do any business with brutal undemocratic, Communist dictatorships!

Doing the right thing should be done with intention, not for the attention. We have no issues with companies doing the right thing and boycotting the Russians, but it smacks of hypocrisy and self-promotion when they promote it.

All businesses operating outside the USA should have factored in potential risk of the market they enter. In the current case, russia cannot be permitted to threaten democracy!! Companies benefitting from democracy need to respect democracy.

Providing support to Russia's economy is tantamount to collusion with a government that commits war crimes and threatens world stability. This isn't just about finances and profits. I want to be able to look at myself in the mirror without shame.
