In recent weeks, several Maine cities and towns have passed ordinances requiring the public to use face coverings when inside businesses and other places.

Since Portland's requirement went into effect Jan. 5, similar mandates have begun in Bath, Brunswick, Freeport and South Portland. Other communities, including Falmouth, have rejected such proposals. (And an update: On Monday, the city of Portland rescinded its mandate.)

Cases of COVID-19 in Maine surged in January, mostly due to the omicron variant's toll among unvaccinated people. However, the number of hospitalizations now appears to be waning.

As of Friday, 1,804 Mainers had died of COVID-associated causes.

As countries around the world are lifting all mandates, why would more towns implement them? Does the city of Portland's crack medical researchers know something that Italian, UK,, Denmark and others don't?

Way too complicated to answer yes or no. With this bug we have to be nimble.

We need to smarten up and do what other countries are doing and get on with life. Corona viruses have been around for decades and they are not going anywhere. We shut down our state for Covid and I am sorry people died with the virus, but people don't seem to care that over 600 Maine people died in 2021 alone from overdoses. We need to do more than throw money at substance abuse issues but nobody seems too concerned about the number of those deaths. Those in power have globbed on to Covid as a means to condition people to do what the government says without question. People with underlying medical conditions still need to take precautions just as I hope they did pre-Covid. But the rest of the world needs to get back to going about their business. Enough with the mandates!

It has become very evident that face masks are not helpful and have not curtailed the virus infection evidenced by the fact that 150 million people have been infected since the 2 weeks we were told would flatten the curve. Time to become a free state again.
