Businesses these days are generally growing more diverse — breaking down archaic divides across race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and other qualities. There's also been growing awareness of how ignorance, fear and sometimes just poor communication can perpetuate those barriers among a company's employees or other communities.

Recent unrest and outright violence have reminded us: America still has much work to do before it can live out the meaning of its creed, that all people are created equal. But there are encouraging signs of progress.

In Maine, they include the performances of some companies in the newly released Corporate Equality Index, or the work of businesses to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

    I don't care where you're from (background, ethnic or geographic), the real obstacles to success in business in Maine, i.e., high taxes, energy costs, mediocre infrastructure, low wages and a difficult regulatory environment are equal opportunity dampeners.

    The type of business you are trying to establish is more of a factor than the background of the people trying to set this business up. Below the surface, Mainers still hold a level of distrusts with people "from away". Making things worse is the influx of wealthy new people bent on keeping Maine rustic .

    I have to think that those business people who are non-white and non-Christian are in a far better place to render an accurate opinion for purposes of this survey.
