The White House recently announced that President Donald Trump planned to tour the Guilford manufacturing plant of Puritan Medical Products on Friday, June 5. The company is one of only two in the world making clinical swabs needed for COVID-19 testing.

The visit, Trump's first to Maine since he became president in 2017, was expected to be a chance for the president "to champion the administration’s success in harnessing and bolstering American manufacturing capabilities" in response to the pandemic, according to the White House.

However, Gov. Janet Mills said she had concerns his presence would be a security risk. In recent days, Trump has had an even higher profile than usual, partly because of his response to civil unrest across the nation.

On Tuesday, few details were available about the president's visit, and plans were not yet confirmed.

Our individual beliefs feed our bias. Yes, it can be argued that any president of any party (past, present, future) is a public figure where there are photo opportunities. So what is the real underlying issue at question here?

Why not? Look at it from his point of view - he can't lead the country, he doesn't really have any policy issues that he understands or believes in, it won't get in the way of his infantile twitter tantrums and he can watch TV on the plane. If only Guilford had a KFC it would be a great day for him.

I would rather he stay in DC and sign the changes to the CARES Act and I'm hoping his handlers can convince him (maybe by giving him a Popsicle) that is a better use of his time.

Democrats never do this type of stunt.

Maine does not need him or his presence. A waste of our time and resources.

Let's call this what it is, a campaign junket. This trip is definitely a security problem and the cost the state and some communities will likely have to pay for police coverage and other security measures is high. As another comment stated, the throngs of Secret Service and advance team personnel coming to the state, from places with much higher COVID-19 rates than Maine, adds another level of unnecessary risk. If the intention was to celebrate and thank Puritan and its employees, a video conference with an emmisary there in person to present a signed letter would have done the job well and responsibly in terms of costs, resources, health and safety.
