Unlike the deadline in the past two years, this year's Tax Day — the due date for individual income tax returns — falls in April.

Most Americans have to file by the end of Monday, April 18. Mainers have until April 19 because of the Patriots' Day holiday, celebrated Monday in the Pine Tree State and in Massachusetts.

When the federal income tax was created in 1913, the deadline was March 1. That changed to April 15 in 1955, and the due date has usually been on or around that date.

Because of the pandemic, the IRS last year pushed the filing deadline back to May 17, and in 2020 it was postponed to July 15.

Whenever it falls, Tax Day can be a nail-biting occasion for some Americans who submit their returns with just hours — or even minutes — to spare.

I think we should pay our taxes with a smile. I tried that, but the IRS wanted money.

We generally try for February, but had to wait this year for late information which caused us to file in mid-March. We like to give ourselves plenty of time so that if there is a problem, we can deal with it. If we owe money, we can still wait until the end to actually file, but if we are getting money back, we might as well get it as soon as possible.

I try to get it in as early as possible to mitigate the risks of someone fraudulently submitting a false return in our names.
