Will Maine become an "innovation hub" for the biotechnology and information technology industries? There's long been talk that the state is on its way.

Now a Lewiston native and former Silicon Valley entrepreneur, David Roux, is trying to jump start a hub in Maine, focused on life sciences and artificial intelligence. With a $100 million gift from Roux, Northeastern University will launch a research arm, the Roux Institute, later this year in Portland.

But becoming the next technology hub requires a critical mass of science and business, of people with lofty theories and others with deep pockets. As the New York Times wrote this week, "it is the most advanced and complex industries — like biotechnology and semiconductors — that are most concentrated. And the geography of invention is getting narrower every year."

Will the new, $100 million Roux Institute succeed in transforming Maine into a tech "innovation hub"?
