Like other states, Maine is easing some restrictions that have been in place to slow COVID-19 infection. In two announcements last week, Gov. Janet Mills lifted limits on public gathering sizes, then eliminated the requirement for indoor social distancing and — for fully vaccinated people — ended the face covering requirement.

The new policies follow changes in federal guidance, and take effect in Maine on May 24.

However, businesses may continue their own requirements for employees and customers to wear face masks in public spaces. As of Friday, some major retailers were divided in their response to the federal guidance. Costco and Walmart relaxed their rules, but CVS, Home Depot and Target all said they will continue mask mandates for now.

Will your business require the use of face masks in any public spaces, even after Maine's policy changes next week?
Yes (39%, 135 VOTES)
No (61%, 213 VOTES)

The evidence based science has been clear for some time that masks should not be required for fully vaccinated people. Same is true for young children, even though the CDC has not changed its guidance for young children, who are still required to mask indoors and outdoors. Time to change that also.

Hospitals are not included in the change in guidance, we'll continue with masking until the guidance changes. Follow the science.

In response to another comment here questioning why we wouldn't trust information provided by the CDC... My husband and I have a small child who is unable to receive a vaccine yet. It is our responsibility to keep a safe space for him. Since folks who are unvaccinated will almost certainly stop wearing masks, we feel that we must continue to require masks (and also not frequent other businesses that are not requiring them).

This should have happened long ago.

Trust the science they’ve been telling us for over a year. The CDC says the science says no more masks needed. Why wouldn’t we trust that information?
