After a three-month reprieve, the deadline for filing federal and state income tax returns arrived Wednesday. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Treasury Department and Maine Revenue Services had previously pushed back the April 15 due date to July 15. The extension applied to both personal and corporate income taxes, and many other tax deadlines were extended too.

Practical concerns created by the public health crisis made the new date necessary, just as they did for Northeastern states including Maine during the spring nor'easter of 2007. But except for such crises — or when it falls on a weekend or holiday — Tax Day has been April 15 since 1955.

Beyond the short-term help the 2020 extension has provided Mainers, some seem to prefer the July 15 deadline in general. April can be a busy month; Tax Day this year was sandwiched just after the Easter holiday, during Passover, and on the eve of most school vacations.

I think a June 30th deadline would be nice. It would make paying taxes a lot easier for a lot of folks that had high heating bills, and then real estate taxes to pay in mid March. A date in June would help people get back to more normal/lower bills and might be a better time to pay taxes.

The summer is also a busy season - normally! - and much busier than March/April when we are exiting winter and starting to get the house and yard ready for .... Summer!
