The Maine Public Utilities Commission last week began looking into how telecom giant T-Mobile forecasts use of the dwindling telephone numbers under the state's "207" area code. Last year, the PUC conducted a similar investigation of Verizon Wireless.
Maine is among only 12 states that each are served by a single, unique area code. But as cellphone use has mushroomed, so has the use of "207," one of the 86 original area codes across North America since 1947. The familiar digits have even become part of Maine's brand, experts say.
In some parts of the country, phone-fanatic businesses now obtain numbers with a prestige area code only after paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars to private sellers.

If ya said "YES," you must be from away! Welcome to Maine.
I believe that the "207" is iconic to Maine as a whole. If there must be additional area codes, they should be assigned to new subscribers. No one area of Maine should be able to purloin the "207" identity. Besides, the cost for an existing business customer to re-do all print, virtual and other media - even business cards will be outrageous for any existing customer.
This sounds like the recent trend by luxury car brands to charge customers a subscription to activate a "heated seats" option for example. Or airlines that want to charge $200 to choose any seat for international travel. No one likes to be nickel and dimed to death (or in this case charged hundreds of dollars) for basic services. This poll question feels like someone is looking for justification to charge Mainers to use their well-established area code. Maybe supermarkets will charge us a premium for the privilege of bagging our own groceries? Wonderful.
207 is part of who I am.

Only people getting new lines should get a different area code. To make a business change would be ludicrous. But of course the powers that be in this state do not care how hard they make it for businesses to actually do business in this state. We are not that big of a state, population wise, so who cares if someone in Houlton has another area code as well as someone in Wells. It shouldn't be by what area of the state you are in as this would be another burden business owners shouldn't have to take on. What a waste of money to get all of their paper products, media events and web sites fixed just for a new area code!!
