At Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, 2019 marks 50 years in business, as well as 25 years guiding individuals and the business community in Maine on their paths to well-being. For a quarter of a century, we’ve been here every single day. We’ve grown with you, guided you, and will continue to evolve with you to deliver plans and services that help make quality, affordable care available to all.
The first step towards serving people is to put them first. Seeing our members and communities get healthier and happier is what keeps us focused on making great care, and better well-being, accessible to all. In 2008, we helped make subsidized insurance available across the state, by becoming the official carrier of Maine’s Dirigo Program. Today, we’re proud to offer coverage to individuals throughout Maine by way of the Health Insurance Marketplace, where our presence has been a constant since 2014. Because we believe that doing what is best for the communities of Maine is what matters most.
We embrace our role as a guide in today’s complex health care system by delivering the best service possible. And no market segment is too big or too small. We serve individuals, broker and consultant partners, and businesses of every size, from small not-for-profit organizations, to major hospital systems and higher education institutions. In fact, we are the most frequently selected insurance carrier by Maine’s small businesses.
By listening to the communities of Maine, we’ve learned that there are many ways to reach better health. That’s why our plans support all kinds of preferred health care methods. Today, we’re championing a more holistic view of health, with benefits such as covered acupuncture visits, and discounts on complementary modalities such as reiki, homeopathy, naturopathy, and reflexology. And our personal health coaches can help members along whichever path they’re on to improve their overall well-being – from quitting smoking to exercise and nutrition. Plus, we offer members up to $150 reimbursement annually for gym membership or qualifying classes.
One thing that’s clear is that Mainers value mental health. And we’re glad to be of the same mind on this matter. For many years, we’ve brought mindfulness to the forefront of health with innovative programs and resources. Our Mind the Moment program – a unique mindfulness program offered by Harvard Pilgrim since 2005 – offers small- and large-scale training and education to all members and employer groups. The program is proven to reduce stress and increase productivity in employees and can be customized to fit the specific needs of a group.
We don’t just deliver to our communities, we dig right in. In 2018, through the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, 96% of our employees contributed a total of 3,824 service hours across New England, and right here in Maine. Through the Foundation, we’re able to award about half a million dollars a year in grants and sponsorship to Maine, and a total value of almost $4 million across the region.
Everyone knows that healthy food is fundamental to good health. Local Maine produce is delicious and abundant, but too many individuals and families still can’t afford it. Our Foundation’s Healthy Food Fund has helped improve access by supporting Maine-based organizations that volunteer to grow, harvest, or deliver produce to food banks or pantries.
As the longest-tenured not-for-profit health plan currently operating in Maine, we’re proud to be an active part of this state’s health and history.
Our involvement in the community isn’t just a recent development. It’s a continuation of our mission to help the people of Maine get future-fit. Through our Growing Up Healthy initiative, we supported the passage of the soda tax in 2008 and of statewide legislation requiring BMI reporting and menu labeling in 2009. From 2007-2012, our support for the Let’s Go! Goes to School initiative helped to encourage healthier habits in school by limiting sugary beverages, improving access to drinking water, increasing physical activity, and limiting recreational screen time.
As the longest-tenured not-for-profit health plan currently operating in Maine, we’re proud to be an active part of this state’s health and history. It’s been our honor working with and serving these communities for the last 25 years, and we look forward to what the future may bring.
