2025 Goals

For over 90 years, The Jackson Laboratory has made extensive contributions in nearly every disease area. The JAX strategic plan presents an unprecedented opportunity to leverage JAX’s scientific expertise and unique capabilities to develop and provide research resources to the global scientific community. Our major goals are:

- Build the bridge between mouse model organisms and human disease; expand and innovate JAX® Mice, clinical and research services

- Create the Rare Disease Translational Center; create enhanced cellular models of human disease

- And, for our more than 3,000 co-workers worldwide, deliver an exceptional employee experience.

Community Impact

The Jackson Laboratory’s Volunteer Time Off program offers all employees two paid days per year to participate in charitable activities in their community. JAX Community Volunteers are small groups of employees who work for a common cause, including with Heart of Maine United Way, Alzheimer’s Association of Maine and others. JAX staff members serve on town councils, select boards and planning boards, and are involved in nonprofit organizations that support youth and families with issues such as food insecurity, housing, public health, libraries and education. The JAX College Scholarship Program supports first-generation Maine college students pursuing a STEM degree.

Giving Opportunities

As a nonprofit biomedical research institution, The Jackson Laboratory can pursue new discoveries thanks in part to philanthropy. Support from donors impacts every facet of JAX’s work, from research initiatives and educational programs to recruiting and retaining the brightest minds. Gifts can help scientists advance treatments and cures for addiction, aging, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, neurological and immune disorders, rare diseases and more. Volunteer Opportunities

JAX welcomes volunteers to the Maine State Science Fair, managed by JAX and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance. The science fair encourages high school students to submit a science or engineering project and is always seeking volunteers with STEM expertise to be judges at the event.

Awards/Accolades

In 2024 LuAnn Ballesteros, Vice President, External and Government Affairs, was awarded the Maine Development Foundation’s Kenneth M. Curtis Leadership Award; The Jackson Laboratory was awarded the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce’s 2024 President’s Award; and JAX’s signature education program, the Summer Student Program, celebrated its 100th year.
