2 rural Maine hospitals named among the country's top 100

Two rural Maine hospitals rank among the best 100 in the country, according to an annual study by a Portland-based consulting group.

Franklin Memorial Hospital, in Farmington, and Pen Bay Medical Center, in Rockport, were named to the list of top 100 rural and community hospitals compiled by the Chartis Center for Rural Health.

The ranking is based on a Chartis evaluation conducted since 2010, and which analyzes over 1,000 hospitals on the basis of 36 criteria in areas such as quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost and financial efficiency.

Only one other New England facility, Central Vermont Medical Center, in Barre, Vt., made the top 100.

“Despite the challenges and instability we see each day across the rural health safety net, the Top 100 program continues to illuminate strategies and innovation for delivering higher quality care and better outcomes within rural communities,” said Michael Topchik, national leader of the Chartis Center for Rural Health. “We are delighted to be able to spotlight the efforts of these facilities.”

The Chartis Center for Rural Health, which has offices in Portland, is part of Chicago-based Chartis Group, which provides advisory services and analytics to the health care industry.

Maine’s rural hospitals have previously received public recognition for high quality of care and other measures of success. The Leapfrog Group, a national hospital watchdog organization, in December named five Maine acute care facilities, including Pen Bay, as the country’s top rural ones.
