20-year rail plan eyes L-A service

Operators of Amtrak's Downeaster train are eyeing an extension to Lewiston-Auburn as part of the Boston-Brunswick line's next 20-year plan.

The Sun Journal reported the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority's latest Service Development Plan will include dollar estimates and an outline of how the authority would extend service to the Lewiston-Auburn area.

To make that happen, NNEPRA Executive Director Patricia Quinn said there remain several track improvements that need to be completed, including the completion of a train layover building in Brunswick, improvements to the southbound track heading into Portland and four new miles of track in Yarmouth to allow trains to pass each other more easily.

The paper reported that the latest plan won't include a timetable for the proposed extension to the Lewiston-Auburn area.
