Maine’s largest wind farm gets final OK

A proposed $398 million, 62-turbine wind farm in Bingham received final state approval on Monday, making it Maine’s largest wind project yet to get a pass from regulators.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the decision was issued by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection after issuing a draft order on Aug. 27 in favor of the project being backed by Blue Sky West LLC, a subsidiary of Boston-based First Wind.

The 186-megawatt project is expected to be financed in part from a recently approved $333 million joint venture between First Wind and Nova Scotia-based power company Emera. The project is also expected to receive a line of credit or loan from a financial institution.

Paul Williamson, executive director of the Maine Ocean and Wind Industry Initiative, has previously said the project will boost the local economy. The project also is expected to increase the reliability of the region's energy grid.
