Emera Maine is warning customers of a new sophisticated telephone scam that has already cost a number of its small business customers thousands of dollars.
Emera Maine spokesman Bob Potts told WLBZ-TV2 that a number of customers in the Bangor area have received phone calls demanding a payment, with callers telling customers that their service will be disconnected within a few hours without paying an amount through non-refundable forms of payment like prepaid debit cards.
To make matters worse, Potts told WLBZ that the scammer’s number may appear to come from Emera on the customer’s call ID, and that messages that are left sound identical to the company’s own Maine customer service recording.
“Emera Maine customers will never receive a call from a representative demanding immediate payment with the threat of disconnection,” Karen Holyoke, Emera vice president of customer experience, said in a statement. “Customers facing disconnection are notified by mail, may receive a notification by automated or personal call, and are encouraged to contact us to work out an arrangement. We make every effort to work with our customers and disconnection is a last resort.”
