Recently acquired Emera Maine, the state’s second-largest electric utility, has changed its name to Versant Power.

The new identity was required under terms of the company’s sale for $1.3 billion to ENMAX Corp., of Calgary, Alberta, according to a Versant spokeswoman. The Maine Public Utilities Commission approved the deal March 17 and it closed a week later.

"Versant Power is our new name, and it speaks to what we know, how we work and who we serve," said President and COO Mike Herrin in a news release Thursday.

"Our new name signals that we are well-versed in northern and eastern Maine's electricity delivery system, versatile in how we work by adapting and improving the ways we deliver power, and conversant with our customers in responding to their electricity needs."

The company said its 159,000 customers will be able to continue obtaining service as they do now. The company billing address and phone number will remain the same. Over the coming months, Versant will update its bills, correspondence, website and email addresses to include the new name.

"Versant Power's name and logo have been specifically developed to recognize the unique and proud identity of the company and the valued customers and communities it serves," said Gianna Manes, ENMAX president and CEO.

Emera Maine was formed in 2010 from the merger of Bangor Hydro and Maine Public Service Co., both of which were subsidiaries of Emera Inc., a Halifax, Nova Scotia-based utility holding company with 2018 revenues of $6.5 billion CAD.
