$2.4 million awarded for ferry improvements

Casco Bay Lines and the Maine State Ferry Service will split $2.4 million that Maine's Department of Transportation is awarding through a federal program funding construction of car ferries and ferry terminal facilities in 18 states.

Sen. Susan Collins, ranking member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, said in a press release the money will be distributed as follows:

  • $1.2 million to the Casco Bay Island Transit District in Portland to help cover the cost of engineering and construction of a new passenger ferry, the M/V Wabanaki, which will replace the M/V Island Romance, a passenger ferry certified to carry 299 passengers that was constructed in 1973.
  • $1.2 million to the Maine State Ferry Service to help cover the cost of the design and construction of a new ferry berthing system, transfer bridge and fender system, and to support the pier at the Frenchboro Ferry.

Collins said the investments "will help provide critical upgrades to our aging ferry infrastructure and continue to promote economic development to our island communities."
