Jetport lands $9.3 million grant
The Portland International Jetport will receive a multi-year $9.3 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to help pay for recent expansions.
The grant, announced by U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, will be disbursed over the next three years and will help cover the costs of a $9 million de-icing apron that has already been built, as well as concrete barriers for gates at its new terminal. Pingree said the de-icing apron – which recaptures and treats much of the fluid used to de-ice planes so it can be resold – is helping to protect water quality in Casco Bay and cited it as an example of how the jetport’s new LEED-gold terminal is a model of sustainability.
As reported by Mainebiz last month The Portland International Jetport is the second commercial airport in the country to receive the environmentally friendly LEED gold certification. Other green features of the jetport’s $75 million expansion and upgrade include the state's largest geothermal heating and cooling system and materials sourced from within 500 miles of Portland. Jetport Director Paul Bradbury said the geothermal system saves the jetport 50,000 gallons of fuel a year, resulting in savings of $150,000. That system was funded largely by a $3 million federal aviation grant.
The jetport opened its new 145,000-square-foot terminal in early October.
