$3M to fund Brooksville mine cleanup

The cleanup of the former Callahan Mine site in Brooksville has received an up to $3 million boost from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The money comes from the EPA's Superfund, which supports the reclamation of abandoned hazardous waste sites, according to the Bangor Daily News. Work is scheduled to begin next spring or summer with cleanup of nearby private properties that have been contaminated with lead and arsenic, and removal of PCBs, commonly used in coolants and transformers, from the mine site. The EPA studied the site for several years before drafting a remediation plan last October, and future stages will require additional funding that may not be available for a few years, project manager Ed Hathaway told the paper.

Callahan Mining Co. operated at the site in the late 1960s and early 1970s, mining copper, zinc, lead and silver. The site was listed as eligible for Superfund money in 2002.
