Canada-based coffee shop chain Tim Hortons is closing 36 underperforming restaurants and 18 kiosks in New England, including two in southern Maine, but plans to open two new locations in western and northern Maine.
Tim Hortons, based in Ontario, announced yesterday it's shutting down all its locations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, leaving Maine as the sole New England state where the company operates, according to The Associated Press and the Sun Journal. Restaurants in Westbrook and Windham will close, while the company will open new locations in Lincoln and Madawaska, keeping the total of Tim Hortons' Maine locations at 30.
Tim Hortons said it has lost $4.4 million this year on the locations it's shuttering, and instead will focus on other Northeast and Midwest markets. The company began operating in New England in 2004 when it bought the Rhode Island-based Bess Eaton coffee shop chain for $42 million. The company will have 567 U.S. locations, with plans to open 300 more by 2013, and has 3,100 Canadian locations.
