$4M Army building in Kittery under way

Military officials yesterday broke ground on a $4 million recruiting facility at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.

The new, 11,000-square-foot facility will house the U.S. Army's New England Recruiting Battalion headquarters, which has been relocated from Brunswick Naval Air Station, according to Seacoast Online. The facility will house between 27 and 40 personnel and will handle paperwork for active-duty Army and Army Reserve recruits. The battalion services six companies that run 38 recruiting locations in Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts, according to the news site. BNAS, which is closing in 2011, hosted the facility for 23 years.

The building is slated for completion next summer and is expected to win LEED certification.
