Trustees approve UMA restructuring

University of Maine System trustees yesterday approved an interim reorganization of the Augusta school that includes consolidating its colleges and eliminating an administrator's position.

The reorganization will consolidate University of Maine at Augusta's three colleges into two: the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Professional Programs, which will include nursing, business and computer information degrees, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. As a result, a dean's position will be cut. UMA President Allyson Hughes Handley said the decision isn't related to cutting costs, but to turning the university's focus to four-year degree programs instead of associate's degrees. The restructuring will become effective this fall and remain in place until UMA's strategic planning process ends in fiscal year 2011, according to MPBN.

The board of trustees also approved a report on the system's 2009 plan, "New Challenges, New Directions," aimed at handling an estimated $42.8 million systemwide budget shortfall, and approved replacing boilers at the university's flagship campus in Orono, according to the Bangor Daily News.
