$4M to benefit Acadia National Park center

Acadia National Park is receiving more than $4 million to revamp its tourist bus service and build a new welcome center.

The federal park will use the $4,005,900 in funding from the Federal Transit Administration for site preparation for its intermodal bus facility and a visitor center, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. The center will include parking for visitors, a bus boarding area and a bus maintenance garage to support the park's Island Explorer bus system, a free service that has served 3.3 million riders since 1999, according to the press release.

The welcome center is expected to ease traffic problems, better allocate park resources and enhance the visitor experience, according to the release.
