6 Maine airports to receive $2.5M in FAA funds

Six Maine airports will get a total of $2,520,784 in federal funding to make infrastructure improvements, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Tuesday in a news release.

The funding, awarded in the latest round of grants from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, will be allocated to:

  • Knox County Regional Airport, $967,500 to rehabilitate 66,500 square yards of the existing general aviation apron pavement, which has reached the end of its useful life. The grant funds the first phase, which consists of rehabilitating 20,000 square yards of the apron pavement.
  • Dewitt Field, at Old Town Municipal Airport, $668,884 to construct a 9,600-square-foot, six-bay hangar building. The grant funds the first phase, which includes the design and construction.
  • Princeton Municipal Airport, $536,400 to help construct a 900-square-foot terminal building to allow the efficient movement of passengers and baggage. This project will also install a 600-foot-long perimeter fence to deter unauthorized persons and vehicles from entering the airfield.
  • Brunswick Executive Airport, $150,000 to rehabilitate 6,000 feet of the existing Taxiway A needed to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement. This grant funds the first phase, which consists of rehabilitating 3,000 feet of Taxiway A.
  • Pittsfield Municipal Airport, $129,600 to construct a 12,000-square-foot, eight-unit hangar building. This project funds the first phase, which consist of an environmental study and permitting.
  • Newton Field in Jackman, $68,400 to help extend Runway 13/31 to 3,600 feet to meet the operational needs of the airport. This grant funds the first phase, which consists of the environmental assessment.

“In a large state like Maine, local airports are an important transportation option that help promote job creation, economic development, and access to emergency services in rural communities,” said Collins, who chairs the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee.

“This funding will allow local airports improve their infrastructure to enhance their safety and efficiency for Mainers and visitors to our state.”
