In the aftermath of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, when 3,000 lives were lost, Maine, like the rest of the country, struggled with the immediate economic effects. A sharp drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average affected publicly traded companies, but a more grassroots impact was felt by the tourism industry. Bookings dropped off immediately, Mainebiz reported in its Oct. 1, 2001, issue. The owner of a Bar Harbor inn said he expected revenue to drop by $15,000 for the fall season. One travel agent lamented that agencies weren’t included in the government bailout package drafted after 9/11. “That means our short-term issue is survival,” he told Mainebiz. “We have smaller agencies calling, begging us to take them in, and we’ll be looking at that seriously over the next few weeks.”
The follow-up: A post-9/11 survey of 400 Mainers published in the Oct. 15, 2001, issue of Mainebiz showed that 40% of respondents predicted the economy would get worse over the next 12 months. More than half, 51%, said they expected fewer fall visitors as a result of the attacks.
