Activists: Plum Creek report goes too far

The Land Use Regulation Commission today begins public deliberations on Plum Creek's proposal to develop 20,000 acres of land near Moosehead Lake, but some environmental activists say LURC's staff has already overstepped its boundaries.

In a report last week from Maine Public Broadcasting Network, leaders of the Forest Ecology Network and RESTORE: The North Woods say the 127-page document LURC's staff released last week, which details changes suggested to meet the commission's concerns, is an unprecedented blueprint for approval. "This document is written as if it were a playback for Plum Creek to make a few changes to its proposal and then, if you follow the logic, LURC would have little choice but to approve the rezoning petition," Jym St. Pierre, Maine director of RESTORE, told MPBN.

The staff report includes suggestions on scaling back specific elements of the project, and was asked for by LURC commissioners for use during the deliberations. The first of the two public deliberations started today at 9:30 a.m., in Augusta. The second session will begin tomorrow at the same time and place.
