BIW a finalist for Coast Guard contract

Bath Iron Works has been chosen as a finalist for a contract to build ships for the United States Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard's request for proposals, which BIW replied to last summer, was for the construction of one Coast Guard cutter with options to build up to 12 more over the next several years, Jim DeMartini, BIW's spokesman, told Mainebiz this morning. The Coast Guard cutters are much smaller than the destroyers BIW currently builds for the Navy, but with Congress discussing the elimination of funding for the next generation of destroyers, the Coast Guard contract would "provide us with the opportunity to keep the workforce going on a project of a different type," DeMartini said.

DeMartini would not say how much the contract could be worth because it is a competitive bidding process, or how many jobs it could create. It is also unknown how many other companies are in the running for the contract.
