Aeronautical school leaves BNAS

An aeronautical school at the Brunswick Naval Air Station that initially announced plans to expand when the base is decommissioned has instead closed.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, which offers training for military professionals, in March 2008 said it would expand its campus and offer classes to the general public in 2011, serving as many as 2,500 students. But Steve Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, told The Times Record the school has instead left Brunswick, and the few officials it had remaining on the base relocated. Levesque said the departure was related to the economic recession.

Embry-Riddle established a presence on the base in 1994 and served about 100 military personnel each year. The school was expected to help draw aviation-related businesses to the redeveloped base, but Levesque said Southern Maine Community College and the University of Maine are collaborating to establish an aeronautical program.
