Renovations under way at Augusta hotel

Freeport-based Giri Hotels is spending as much as $1.8 million to renovate the former Holiday Inn in Augusta.

The 100-room Augusta Civic Center Inn will become a Best Western following renovations and be renamed the Best Western Plus Civic Center, according to the Kennebec Journal. The $1.6 million-$1.8 million in renovations include a new elevator, laundry room and public areas, as well as changes to guest rooms. The work is expected to be completed in the spring.

The company earlier this month bought the 138-room Holiday Inn in Waterville and renamed it the Waterville Grand Hotel. Giri Hotels also owns the Comfort Inn in Augusta and the Econo Lodge in Freeport.
