Portland-based Wright-Ryan Construction has had only one president in its 40-year history — until now.
Effective July 1, John Ryan stepped down from the president role, while remaining chair of the board of directors.
Alan Sparn took over as president of Wright-Ryan, the firm said Monday. He has been chief operating officer since joining the firm in 2022. His selection was originally announced in March.
Sparn takes over at a time when Wright-Ryan has a number of big projects under way.
Vertical Harvest, a hydroponic farm system in Westbrook, is expected to open next year.
Other recent projects Wright-Ryan has managed or is managing include the Hotel Ursa on the campus of University of Maine in Orono, the city of Westbrook’s downtown parking garage, the Tekαkαpimək Contact Station at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Patten and new staff housing for Witham Family Hotels in Bar Harbor.
Founded by Ryan and Tom Wright in 1984, Wright-Ryan now has 100 employees who are also owners, thanks to the initiation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 2016.
“As we look to the future of Wright-Ryan, I am confident that this team of employee-owners will build upon our legacy of valuing people, partnership, community and innovation,” said Sparn. “These core values have guided our decisions, elevated our approach and paved the way for our future, and we have much to be excited about in the years ahead.”
