Alternate turnpike toll plan proposed

A member of the Maine Turnpike Authority board of directors says that proposed toll increases on I-95 should be extended to those entering or leaving the turnpike at I-295, saying that Lewiston-Auburn travelers should be spared another toll hike.

Bob Stone will present his proposal for toll rate increases later this month as the MTA tries to address a projected debt that will require $26.5 million in additional annual revenue, according to the Sun Journal.

Stone's proposal calls for a $2 toll at Maine Mall adjacent exit 45, a free exit which many motorists use to avoid paying a $1 toll at exit 44. Both exits connect I-95 to I-295, but many drivers opt to use the toll-free exit 45.

The Androscoggin County representative of the MTA board also suggests raising entrance and exit fees to I-95 in Gardiner and Falmouth from $1 to $2.

The proposal presented by MTA staff in June would raise tolls at New Gloucester from $1.75 to $2.50; at West Gardiner from $1.25 to $2; and at York from $2 to $3.

Stone will present his own proposal at the MTA's board meeting on July 18.
