Anthem weighing exchange options after state decision

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield officials say they’re weighing their options after the state rejected part of the company’s plan that would force around 9,000 existing policyholders in southern and central Maine to change health care providers, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The company had hoped to shift all of its individual policyholders to a new narrow-network plan that it would also offer on the state’s federally run health insurance exchange, a reform of the Affordable Care Act. That network would exclude six hospitals in the central and southern parts of the state. Eric Cioppa, the superintendent of the state’s Bureau of Insurance, decided the company could not force policyholders now getting care at those hospitals to change providers.

The paper reported that the company can now appeal the decision or comply by providing a new plan with fewer restrictions for those policyholders. The company could also comply under protest of the decision while pursuing an appeal.
